Abstract:

Contains mostly materials from Dr. Raymond Babcock's military service as a surgeon in France during World War I. Materials include notebooks, field medical training manuals, lectures, reports, official correspondence, German and French language translation books, and newspapers. Newspapers include The Ambulator, Stars and Stripes, and the Dispatch Democrat (Mendocino County). Typescript transcripts of relevant articles in the newspapers are also included with the collection. Also includes a few white line architectural drawings of field hospitals, etc. Also contains a small amount of personal material concerning Dr. Babcock's career as a rural doctor and surgeon serving Willits, California and the surrounding areas. Materials for this portion of the papers include his biography, diploma from Hahnemann Medical College of the Pacific (1907), California Board of Medical Examiners certificate (1913), and business license and tax receipts from the city of Willits, California.

Doctor Raymond Arthur Babcock (born November 18, 1889 ; died June 7, 1961) was born and raised in Ukiah, California in Mendocino County. He graduated from Hahnemann Medical College of the Pacific in San Francisco in 1913 and at the age of 28 served as captain and officer in charge of the 364th Masonic Ambulance Corps during World War I, earning a Silver Star for his service in the Battle of the Argonne, France. After the war, he returned to Willits, California and became a renowned local doctor credited with starting Howard Hospital, the first for Willits. His home at 96 Humboldt Street in Willits is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Dr. Babcock is buried in Ukiah Cemetery.
The Masonic Ambulance Corps of California was started by a young group of Master Masons in 1917 and became the 364th Ambulance Company, 316th Sanitary Train, 91st Division, United States Army, serving until 1919. On August 4,1917, the troops left San Francisco for training at Camp Lewis in Washington, ultimately making their way to the front lines of WWI in France.
